    RE: It is always preferable to redeploy workers rather than laying them off. I agree, but that presumes that the company expects to bounce back in the foreseeable future. I’ve mostly worked for tech product/service companies, and if you’re on the downswing there it’s probably because you missed a technology shift, and will continue on that downward trajectory until there is no business. Some industries are cyclical, and can reasonably expect to return to profitability. I’ve not been in one of them.

    Also, tech seems to be a lot more personality driven. I have suddenly reported to managers that didn’t like me, and actively worked to get rid of me. Often they bring people in from previous jobs. That’s a difficult dynamic to overcome.
