One Response to Nota bene: Mass shootings

  1. Peter Varhol says:

I think you have a point; reporting is largely a liberal (or perhaps progressive) endeavor. As a group, reporters do their jobs to expose wrong doing, enable transparency, or simply try to make things better than they are.

However, I think there’s a further reason why domestic terrorism is an out-sized concern, whether in the press or among the population. To many people, it appears senseless and random. Despite the odds, people are scared that it could happen to them, any day and any time.

Most of the things that can kill us are at least partly under our control – speeding, smoking, drinking, and the like. We don’t usually consciously acknowledge them, but at some level we know they are there. This one is totally outside of our control, unless we barricade ourselves in our homes. That is why the media, human beings all of them, get freaked out at mass shootings.
