Legal lesbian marriage in Texas

It turns out that there are at least two legal lesbian marriages in America. Not civil unions in Vermont, mind, but fully-fledged bona fide marriage. And they're in Texas!

This fact emerges from an article in the New York Times today about a man in Kansas who's trying to stop his late father's bride from inheriting half his wealth, on the grounds that she isn't a woman. (She's a male-to-female transsexual.) Fast-forward to the fifth paragraph:

Since marriage is seen as a fundamental right, several legal experts said that if transsexuals like Mrs. Gardiner were barred from marrying men, they would probably be allowed to marry women. Indeed, after a Texas court invalidated a similar marriage in 1999, at least two male-to-female transsexuals have married women in that state.

Having spent a bit of time among transsexuals in New York, I can definitely say that lesbianism is really quite common among male-to-female transsexuals. I wouldn't want to start speculating why, but I have a feeling that it reflects a much greater than usual openness towards gender fluidity in that community.

Obviously, the fact that there are two legal gay marriages in Texas is no great victory for gay rights: most biological women are extremely unlikely to find love with a male-to-female transsexual, and it's unfair that they're the only ones allowed to marry other women.

But all the same, it's worth stopping to savor the irony of a judicial decision directed against transsexual marriage being the instrument by which gay marriage in the US finally became a reality.

Being a lesbian I think homosexual marriage should be allowed but only in some states because in some states there are more prejudice people who are against gay marriage. Heterosexuals are always saying that gay people spread AIDS. But if they let us marry wouldn't that lower the risk? That is, if we were the actual cause...which the happy, committed, faithful homosexuals are not. We value our relationship and its faithfullness and dedication just as a straight person would.

I am doing a research paper for my English 1301 class, but that isn't the only reason that made me interested in the article, also I am a lesbian. I wanted to talk also about my personal views on being "Legal". I am aware that Hawii and Vermont are the only states that a lesbian couple can get the union ceremony legally. I think that is not fair for Texas Gays and Lesbians to get treated like the aren't part of the same society as Vermont. To make a long story short do you have any more information regarding the legalized lesbian couple that is married in Texas? I am madly in love with a female who I have known all my life. Her and I have been together for a while and in the near future I want to marry her. I feel like no one should have anything bad to say about gay/lesbian marriages because that's the persons marital preference about whom they wanna be with. They are entitled to be with whomever they wish. I am for gay/lesbian marriages. Love is blind and has no prejudices or barriers. So if there is anyone out there who wants to marry someone of the same gender but is afraid of what others may think I say go for it because you have to spend the rest of your life with that person, not them and if that person makes you happy like my woman makes me happy then live your life the way you want to because no one else is going to live it for you. This female and I has been together for a year and 5 1/2 months. We argue often like normal couples do, but we still love each other and still will cut for each other. We always talk about how would it be if we were really married. I hope if we stay together through thick anad thin, than we one day will get married. I love her very much and I try to make her very happy each day. We only have one concern, who will have who last name. I think lesbian marriages should be legal everywhere. I have been with the love of my life for 2 1/2 years. And we have had our problems believe me. But she has stuck by me throught it all and now we are about to share a baby together. whether they make same-sex marriages legal or not she will always be my wife and the love of my life. So legal or not legal it doesn't change the fact of who I love and who I am.
